Why Merzouga is a must
The dunes of Erg Chebbi are the highest in Morocco (up to 150 metres) and stretch for more than 30 km to the Algerian border. Unlike other, rockier deserts, here you'll find golden, fine sand, almost pink at sunset.
The camel ride
The traditional way to enter the desert is on the back of a camel. It's slow (about 90 minutes to the camp) and peaceful: it gives you time to soak up the landscape, to watch the sun go down over the dunes, to listen to the absolute silence. If you've never ridden a camel, don't worry — ours are docile and the guides show you the ropes in 5 minutes.
The Berber dinner beneath the tents
Once at the camp, you're welcomed with mint tea, rugs, cushions and a traditional dinner: lamb or chicken tajine, couscous and fresh salads. Afterwards, the Berber musicians bring out the drums and the evening runs late.
The night and the sunrise
You'll sleep in a Berber tent (a nomadic tent) with all the comforts — a proper bed and thick blankets, because it gets cool at night even in summer. The best part: getting up early to climb the nearest dune and watch the sunrise. It will leave you speechless.
Extra activities you can't miss
- Sandboarding: sliding down the dunes on a board. We include it free on all our desert tours.
- Quad and buggy: guided routes from 1 to 4 hours. For those who want adrenaline.
- Stargazing: with no light pollution, the Milky Way is perfectly visible.
- Visit to nomad families: a unique experience to learn how people still live in the desert today.
When to go
The best time is from October to April, with pleasant temperatures (20-25°C by day, 5-15°C at night). In summer (July-August) it can exceed 45°C — only recommended for those who can handle extreme heat.
