The currency: the dirham

Morocco's currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). It's a "closed" currency: you can't easily buy it outside the country, so the norm is to bring euros and exchange them there (at airports, banks or official exchange offices). Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops in the cities, but in the souks and villages you'll need cash.

Budget by traveller type

Backpacker (tight)

Staying in simple riads, eating at local stalls and using shared transport, you can get around on a modest daily budget, not counting flights.

Mid-range traveller (the most common)

Charming riads, the odd good hotel, quality restaurants and organised excursions. It's the sweet spot between comfort and price.

Luxury

Palaces like La Mamounia or the Royal Mansour, private transport and exclusive experiences. Morocco offers top-tier luxury at a better price than Europe.

What does an organised tour include?

The big advantage of booking a package is that you know in advance what you'll pay. Our tours usually include private transport, accommodation, a guide, some meals and the night in the desert. That way you avoid surprises and the stress of haggling over every journey.

Tips and haggling

  • Tips: they're customary. A few dirhams for waiters, porters and guides are appreciated.
  • Haggling: in the souks almost nothing has a fixed price. Offer a third of the initial price and rise slowly, always with a smile.
  • Book with a deposit: on our trips you pay only part when booking and the rest in Morocco.

Final tip

Carry some cash for the day-to-day and pay the big bookings (hotels and tours) in advance. Want a tailored quote? Tell us about your trip and we'll prepare a fixed proposal.
