The best time to travel to Morocco

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons, but every month has its charm. A month-by-month and region-by-region guide to choosing when to go.

The short answer

The best times to travel to Morocco are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In those months temperatures are pleasant in both the imperial cities and the desert, and the landscapes are at their best. That said, Morocco is a year-round destination — you just need to know where to go in each season.

Season by season

Spring (March–May) · the best

Warm days (20-28°C), cool nights and green countryside after the winter rains. It's the perfect time to combine Marrakech, the Atlas and the Merzouga desert without the heat.

Autumn (September–November) · almost a tie

The summer heat eases and the desert becomes comfortable again. Golden light, fewer crowds than in spring and slightly softer prices. Ideal for the full Sahara experience.

Winter (December–February) · mild days, cold nights

In Marrakech the days are bright and pleasant (18-20°C), but nights get quite cold and the desert can drop below 0°C. The Atlas is covered in snow. If you don't mind the cold nights, you'll find fewer tourists and lower prices.

Summer (June–August) · extreme heat inland

Marrakech, Fez and the desert easily top 40°C. It's the season to take refuge on the Atlantic coast: Essaouira and its sea breeze hover around 25°C. If you travel in summer, save the desert for sunrise and sunset.

And by region?

  • Marrakech and the imperial cities: avoid July and August. The rest of the year is perfect.
  • Sahara Desert (Merzouga): October to April. In summer, only at sunrise/sunset.
  • Atlantic coast (Essaouira): all year; in summer it's the escape from the heat.
  • Atlas Mountains: spring and autumn for hiking; winter for snow.

Travelling during Ramadan

Ramadan (its dates change every year) is a fascinating cultural experience, but many local restaurants close during the day and the pace slows down. Hotels and tours for travellers run as normal. If you're after maximum energy in the souks and Jemaa el-Fna square, you may prefer other dates.

Our recommendation

If you can choose, aim for April, May, October or November. Have specific dates and aren't sure which route fits best? Write to us and we'll help you plan it, or browse our Morocco packages.
