The golden rule: layers
Morocco's climate changes a lot between day and night, especially in the desert: you can go from 30°C at midday to 8°C before dawn. The key is to dress in layers you can add and remove.
Clothing essentials
- Light, breathable clothes (cotton or linen) for the day.
- A jacket or jumper for the evenings — essential in the desert even in summer.
- Long trousers and tops that cover the shoulders — comfortable and respectful of local culture.
- A scarf or chèche for the sun and sand (dirt cheap to buy there).
- Closed, comfortable shoes for walking the cobbled medinas.
- Sandals for the camp and the hotel.
By season
Summer: very light clothing, a cap, and still a layer for the desert nights. Winter: add a coat, a hat and thin gloves for the nights; in Marrakech the days are mild but it cools down after sunset.
For the desert
- Sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- A head torch for the camp.
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
- A small backpack for the night in the tent (the rest of your luggage stays in the vehicle).
Documents and basics
- Passport valid for at least 6 months (see our visa and entry requirements guide).
- Travel insurance and a digital copy of everything.
- Plug adapter: Morocco uses type C/E plugs (the same as Spain and much of Europe).
- Cash in euros to exchange there and a card for the cities.
- Basic first-aid kit: something for your stomach, plasters, ibuprofen.
